The approach to the iconic UN Plaza was completely resurfaced with high performance permeable pavers made with Pozzotive pozzolan by Unilock, North America’s premier manufacturer of concrete interlocking pavers. Illustrating an optimal circular economy, the pavers were made from the 60 tons of window glass that were harvested by Skanska Construction from the UN General Assembly Building. The glass was processed regionally into Pozzotive by Urban Mining Northeast, sent to Unilock’s regional manufacturing facility and then back to the UN as new pavers, giving the project’s window glass a second life at its place of origin.
Pozzotive has delivered outstanding performance results across a wide range of applications:
The first high-rise
poured-in-place concrete tower to use a ground glass pozzolon
Over 10 million
architectural and structural concrete masonry units (CMUs)
More than 500,000 SF of
Nearly 750,000 SF
Two NYC blocks
of sidewalk pours

Pozzotive Client Testimonials:
Rarely do we have an opportunity to specify materials that have such a profound impact on the reduction of Global Warming Potential without a premium in cost, impact to schedule or challenges with constructability. With Pozzotive® Ground Glass pozzolan, we were able to realize the enhanced sustainability of low embodied carbon concrete, without compromising in any other areas.
A big focus of our team throughout the year was on sustainability. As the only team in the National Competition to utilize Pozzotive®, we were able to create a strong and sustainable cementitious blend that had a very light color.
Through numerous structural and infrastructure concrete pours with Pozzotive ground-glass pozzolan replacing 20-40% of the cement, Urban Mining’s material, supply logistics, applied concrete knowledge, and overall communication have been consistently top-notch. Glad to have this locally-sourced option for well-performing, lower embodied carbon concrete that is also facilitating regional glass recycling.
Cement is the most polluting product in terms of CO2 on the planet, it is responsible for somewhere between 7% and 8% of the world’s CO2. If you could cut that by 30% worldwide, it would be enormous. It would be the single biggest move that anybody could make, anywhere.
I plan to use Pozzotive in every unit I manufacture. I am substituting about 30 percent of Portland cement with it, so I’m saving 30 percent carbon emissions, and that’s huge for me.
